The office of Dr. Michael T. Jones
offers the full complement of dental professionals
to ensure maximum achievement of dental
health for our patients. There are a variety
of roles in the office to serve you. They
are as follows:
The Family Dentists of Raleigh NC
Some or our family dentists have different
degrees. The DDS (Doctor
of Dental Surgery) and DMD
(Doctor of Dental Medicine) are the same degrees.
The difference is a matter of semantics. The
majority of dental schools award the DDS
degree; however, some award a DMD
degree. The education and degrees are the
same.
What Does a Family Dentist
do?
- Diagnose and treat diseases, injuries and malformations
of the teeth and mouth
- Improve a patient’s appearance by using a
variety of cosmetic dental procedures
- Perform surgical procedures such as implants, tissue
grafts and extractions
- Educate patients on how to better care for their
teeth and prevent oral disease
- Teach future dentists and dental hygienists
- Perform research directed to improving oral health
and developing new treatment methods

What does a Dental Hygienist do?
- Performs patient screening procedures
- Teaches patients how to practice good oral hygiene
- Applies preventive materials such as fluorides and
sealants to the teeth
- Counsels patients regarding good nutrition and its
impact on oral health
- Removes calculus and plaque (hard and soft deposits)
from the teeth

What does a Dental Assistant do?
- Assists the dentist with a variety of treatment
procedures -working with dental instruments and materials
- Helps patients feel comfortable before, during
and after dental treatment
- Takes and processes x-rays
- Prepares and sterilizes instruments and equipment
- Communicates with patients, other health professionals,
dental suppliers, business contacts and insurers
- Performs a variety of office management tasks

What does a Dental Laboratory Technician (DLT) do?
- Creates replacements for natural teeth and corrective
devices by following a dentist's written instructions
- Fabricates dentures, bridges, crowns and orthodontic
appliances
- Works with a variety of materials such as waxes,
plastics, precious and non-precious alloys, porcelains
and others to fabricate dental restorations and tooth
replacements

What does the office staff do?
- Schedules appointments
- Verifies patient insurance
- Performs billing and collection
- Processes insurance claims
- Manages patient charts
- Serves patient as an advocate
